Port Deposit town council members argued for more than an hour Tuesday night over what was originally supposed to be a simple renovation project.
At the town’s regular monthly meeting, town planner Henry Burden asked the council to grant him additional funds to finish the plumbing in an outdoor restroom next to the town maintenance building.
Burden claimed that without the funds, the project, which is close to completion, will grind to a halt within the next 10 days. He was unclear as to exactly how much money is required to complete the project.
He also expressed his concern about ceasing the construction so close to the winter months.
Members of the council were hesitant to allocate those funds without a detailed schedule. They also said they preferred to have an estimated final cost given to them in writing before they proceed.
In the end, Burden’s request was denied. The renovations will continue until the existing funds are depleted.
Greenway trail
The required estimates and schedule will be drawn up and distributed to the council. A meeting has been scheduled for Nov. 23 to review the documents.
The town council members discussed the proposed Greenway Trail extension, a foot and bicycle pathway which will connect Perryville and Port Deposit through Mt. Ararat Farm.
Walter Buck III, who owns some of the land in question, asked that the council give a letter to the Department of Public Works so that further deliberation can commence.
Perryville is already in the midst of negotiations.
Streetscape
Meanwhile, the town’s Streetscape Project, which is geared toward revitalization of the waterfront, is still ongoing.
Another Maryland State Highway Administration focus group was held recently to discuss drainage issues in the town’s deteriorating roadways.
Participants in the focus group honed in specifically on the expanses of Port Deposit’s streets that would necessitate closure in case of flooding.
Fall cleaning day
Port Deposit is sponsoring a Fall Cleanup Day this weekend.
On Saturday, Dumpsters will be set up in the parking lot across from town hall for the disposal of yard debris and other waste.
There will also be a dump truck on-site for the collection of tires. For questions, call town hall, 410-378-2121.
