The combination of a call about a suspicious map, a routine drug dog scan and a lockdown the day before had Havre de Grace High School abuzz most of the day Thursday.
On Thursday, a student found a map of the school in a classroom.
A day earlier, the school was placed on an hour-long lockdown after an unknown caller told police there was going to be a shooting at the school.
It is not known if the incidents are related, Capt. Wayne Young of the Havre de Grace Police Department said.
At about 9:15 a.m. Thursday, the high school contacted the Havre de Grace Police Department in reference to a suspicious situation.
A student found a printed map of the school in a computer classroom that contained information about the school which caused officials to be concerned.
“The student reported it to the administration and, erring on the side of caution, immediately enacted the emergency action plan, which permits Havre de Grace police to become involved,” Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications for the school system, said Thursday afternoon.
Neither police nor school officials elaborated on details of the map because it is considered evidence and the investigation is ongoing.
The school was not placed on lockdown as a result of the investigation Thursday, but rather a “heightened awareness” because of police presence, according to Kranefeld.
There were reports of text messages from students about a gun and list of names associated with the map, but police and school officials said any such reports were not true.
“There was no weapon involved and no weapon recovered,” Young said. “I think it’s just rumors starting in the school. It’s very bad misinformation.”
The suspicious map was discovered shortly after a scheduled drug dog scan was conducted at the school.
“This morning started with an official lockdown because of a drug dog scan occurring,” Kranefeld said. “It’s proper protocol that happens every time to allow them to practice their lockdown drill. The lockdown occurred. The drug dog scan was conducted and the lockdown was lifted at 9:15 a.m.”
On Wednesday, Havre de Grace police received a call from an unknown male around 11 a.m. saying there was going to be a shooting.
The school was placed on lockdown Wednesday, but during a thorough search of the building, police did not find any weapons.
The caller also never said when the shooting would take place at the high school, but the school’s resource officer was notified.
Young said the caller was “very vague and uncooperative with the dispatcher.”
Other students provided the names of two juveniles of interest, according to Young, but “nothing panned out” and those leads have been closed.
The phone used to make the call was never found and police aren’t sure if the call was made from inside the school, Young said.
After an hour of searching, police felt comfortable leaving the scene. Young said the incidents may be related, but there’s nothing concrete to link the two.
“We’re still working on that to see if there is a connection,” Young said.
During the course of Thursday’s investigation, a student was taken into custody on a matter unrelated to the initial incident concerning the map, according to Young.
Specific details of the arrest were not available at press time because the paperwork had not been submitted.
A letter to parents of students at the high school about the incident was expected to be sent home Thursday evening in addition to an alert notifying parents of the letter.
An electronic version of the letter will also be available on Havre de Grace High School’s Edline Web site.
