With another snow day on Friday, Harford County Public School students have missed a total of nine days of school due to record-breaking snowfalls in the 2009-10 school year.

The students will attend school on March 31 and April 1, and June 10, 11, 14 and 15 - days the students originally had off before the Blizzards of 2010 struck the county.

The students may also have to go an additional three days in the summer, June 16, 17 and 18, if those days are not waived by State Superintendent Nancy Grasmick.

The school system closed public schools on Friday because of white out conditions and extreme winds causing drifts throughout the county.

Friday's day off marks the ninth snow day for the year, exceeding the six snow days already built into the school calendar.

"We will submit a waiver for any days used beyond the six inclement weather make-up days," Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications, wrote in an e-mail Monday. "At this point, we are looking at three days."

The school system will submit a waiver request from the 180-day school year attendance requirement to the Maryland State Board of Education in mid-March when the winter season is over, according to Kranefeld.

Last Tuesday, the Maryland State Board of Education decided to limit the number of days Maryland schools systems may request to five.

An inclement weather make-up schedule has been posted on the school system's Web site, www.hcps.org.

Parents and members of the community who signed up for the school system's Constant Contact e-mail service received an e-mail containing the link to the inclement weather make-up schedule Friday, according to Kranefeld.

"This information will also be provided to schools to drop into their newsletters and to be posted [on] Edline sites," Kranefeld wrote. "We will continue to update this information as we move forward."

Although Harford County public schools were closed on Friday, Harford Community College was open for business.

The college, which was closed for at least one week in February due to snow, has opted to extend the spring semester by two days. Graduation is still set to go on as scheduled.

Monday classes will meet for an additional day of instruction on May 10, and Tuesday classes will meet May 11.

Faculty of one-day per week classes who had two classes canceled during the snowstorms will add extra minutes to each remaining class, after first consulting with their deans.

Graduation is scheduled for May 20, with final exams wrapping up two days before.

Final exams for the semester will be May 12 through May 18.

The final exam schedule has been revised and is posted on HCC's Web site, www.harford.edu.
