An Edgewood woman claims to have fallen victim to a scheme in which she sent more than $2,500 to London to purchase a car she found on the popular Web site craiglist.

On Feb. 23, the victim contacted the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and said on Feb. 17 she sent a MoneyGram to a person in London, according to a police report.

She said she was purchasing a 2005 Acura TL on craiglist. She said she sent the money and has been unable to find the seller. She said she has no way to get the money back and she contacted craigslist and they can not assist her.

She provided an e-mail address for the suspect.

Monica Worrell, public information specialist with the sheriff’s office, said the department is investigating the incident.

“Some advice for the consumer: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Worrell said. “Think about where you’re money gramming money to people when you’re asked to and be diligent with research before purchases. Seek out trusted locations to do business with. If there’s an issue, you do have a legal course of action.”

Worrell recommended two Web sites, www.nw3c.com and ww.ftc.gov, for more consumer protection information.
