Staff report
I said to The Aegis photo editor Matthew Button at last week’s Fallston vs. Bel Air football game: “I hope I didn’t jinx anything. Every time I write something nice about an athlete they get hurt or fall off the map.” I was speaking about the column that had run in last Friday’s sports section in which I pointed out that Fallston’s Grant Kelly and Patterson Mill’s Cameron Wann were both having great seasons as quarterbacks. My fear, it seems, was unfounded, as Kelly tossed three touchdown passes and Wann threw for an UCBAC-best 271 yards in the Huskies’ game with Perryville. Apparently my column wasn’t enough to stop them.
OK, enough of the back-patting. I’m a little uninspired this week, and generally what I do in such instances is go through the Friday games and give my thoughts (except for football, as Mr. Webb has that covered. I saw him in the office once, in case your interested. He’s 25 to 50 years old, has brown hair and is somewhere between 5-foot-5 and 6-foot-2). So, as field hockey has more games coming up tonight, I’m going with those. Keep in mind that this is being written on Tuesday night, so I’m not taking into account Wednesday’s games. Here’s what you’re looking at for Friday:
Fallston vs. North Harford. This is the game of the week. As of this writing, the Hawks, at 4-0, are the only UCBAC team not to have suffered a loss. Fallston has been beaten once, but it was a 1-0 loss to Bryn Mawr, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in that.
Looking at the Hawks’ game scores, you realize they’ve been cutting things very closely. In its last three victories, North Harford has scored just three times (I’ll let you figure out what the final scores were). I’d love to see an upset, but I’m going to do the obvious and pick Fallston in this one.
Elkton vs. Patterson Mill. The first-place upper division Huskies won’t have any problems dispatching the Susquehanna’s Golden Elks on Friday. My guess is they win by a large margin.
Havre de Grace vs. Aberdeen. Neither team is having what you’d call a good season. The one upside I can see to this match-up is that, as both teams are 0-5, somebody is going to get that first win. My pick here is Aberdeen.
C. Milton Wright vs. Perryville. The Mustangs are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the upper division, and I’m really curious to see if they can give Fallston a run for its money this season. In any case, the Mustangs are probably going to beat the Chesapeake newcomer Perryville this afternoon.
Edgewood vs. North East. This is tough to tell, as they’ve had fairly similar results thus far, with the Rams at 2-4 and North East sporting a single win at 1-3. I’m going with Edgewood, but it will probably be a close one.
Joppatowne vs. Harford Tech. This is another tough one, but I think Tech, having pushed the first-place, upper-division North Harford squad really well a couple weeks ago, losing by a score of 1-0. I’m betting the Cobras take it.
There you have it. I’ll do girls soccer next week.
