Harford Tech won its first indoor track and field championship Monday and did so in convincing fashion.
On the historic but slippery floor of Baltimore’s Fifth Regiment Armory, the Cobra girls outscored six other teams to win the Class 1A East Region Meet by a margin of 26 points. They won three events, finished second in five and qualified 10 athletes for the 1A state meet on Feb. 15.
Desirae Diamond had a hand in 28 of Tech’s 92 points. She won the 55 hurdles in 9.55 seconds, finished second in the 55 dash in 8.18, and ran with Marietta Corbin, Kayla Watson, and Cierra Singleton to win the 4x200 relay in 1:55.4.
Corbin, a freshman, won the 55 dash in 7.94 and placed fifth in the 300 in 46.9.
Kaitlin Ames raced to two second-place finishes, running 2:42.3 in the 800 and 6:04.3 in the 1,600.
Freshman Cierra Singleton placed second in the 55 hurdles in 9.74 and sixth in the 300 dash in 47.3.
Shannon Famini took second in the shot put at 26-6, with Erica Coley third at 25-2.
Also qualifying for the state meet was Jamie Hoban, who took fourth in the 3,200 in 13:14. Hoban ran a leg on the 4x800 relay team with Ames, Kelsi Ludwigsen, and Katie Perzynski, which also qualified in fourth.
Tech’s Ben Butler and Jon Brandonisio won regional titles in the boys competition and led the Cobras to fifth place among eight teams.
Butler won the 800 in 2:17.2, and Brandonisio, the 1,600 in 5:14.2, with teammate Josephambrose Hash finishing third. Samson Robinson placed fourth in the 300 in 41.6 and fifth in the 55 in 7.47, qualifying in the 300. Ryan Porell qualified at third place in the 500 in 1:17.7.
Havre de Grace sent two competitors to the meet in the shot put. Brandy Coard placed seventh in the girls and Dustin Milway, sixth in the boys competition.
Fallston Girls third in 2A East
Evan Campbell and Katie Lazzeri led the Fallston girls to a third-place finish in the Class 2A East Region meet at the Prince George’s Sportsplex in Landover Monday.
Campbell won the high jump at 4-10 and finished second, one-hundredth of a second behind the winner in the 55 dash. The Fallston senior was timed in 7.71 seconds.
Campbell also led the 4x200 relay team to a second-place finish in 1:57.43, less than a second out of first. The Cougars qualified three relay teams for the state meet with second-place finishes in the 4x400 (4:28.71) and 4x800 (10:28.37).
Lazzeri was also involved in a close finish. The sophomore distance runner finished second in the 800 in 2:29.47, about 2 meters behind the winner.
Katie Mitchell, Katie Lahatte, and Lauren DiMauro qualified with fourth-place finishes. Mitchell ran 47.83 in the 300; Lahatte, 10.44 in the 55 hurdles; and DiMauro, 13:16.02 in the 3,200. Fallston scored 65 points for third in the eight-team girls field.
In the boys competition, Mike German pulled away from the field to win the 55 high hurdles in 8.52 seconds. He scored 10 of the team’s 22 points, which gave the Cougars seventh place.
Sophomore Zach Martin placed third in the 3,200 in 10:38.77 behind Elkton’s Luke Arbuckle, who ran 10:10.64. Arbuckle also won the 1,600 in 4:36.32.
Fallston’s 4x200 relay team qualified with a fourth-place in 1:41.28.
Brandon Bryan was the lone scorer for Edgewood with a sixth-place finish in the 1,600 in 4:57.99.
